Frequently asked questions

What is Emma gives?

Emma gives is Emmanuel College’s annual Giving Day, taking place on 16-17 March 2021.

It’s one day for Emma members all over the world to come together and make a real and lasting difference to the lives of Emma students.

During this 24 hour online fundraising challenge, we are aiming to raise as much support as possible for Access and Outreach and Student Hardship.

What difference will my donation make?

Whether you direct your gift to Access and Outreach or Student Hardship your gift to Emma gives will enable students from all backgrounds to come to Emma and ensure they are able to succeed, irrespective of their financial circumstances.

All gifts, of whatever size, add up and make a significant difference. Having a large number of donors encourages others to support us too.

If you’re making your first gift to Emma, your gift will be eligible to be unlock, pound for pound, a special fund for undergraduates across Cambridge as part of the university's Harding Challenge. So your gift will go twice as far, supporting students at Emma and those in the greatest need across the university.

Why is Emma gives different than any other day?

Gifts made to Emma gives go further than usual. Thanks to the generosity of one Emma member, the first £15,000 raised will be matched pound for pound. Several donors have also provided challenge funds that will be unlocked once we achieve various milestones. Take a look at the ‘Challenges’ tab to see if your gift is eligible to unlock funds this year.

Don’t forget to get your gifts in early to take advantage of the matching gift.

NB: For tax purposes, donors who participate in the giving challenges will be credited for their individual contribution only.

How can I make my gift?

We want to make it easy for you to participate in our Giving Day. We’d love you to join in on 16-17 March, but we know that our donors’ schedules may not allow them to participate during the Giving Day itself.

There are several ways to make your gift, whether you’d like to give on the day or before it:

On the day (16-17 March, noon-noon): Online through our Emma gives website

Before the day:

In line with government guidelines, the Development Office team are continuing to work remotely. If you would like to make an early gift to Emma gives, the best way to do so at this time is online.

If you cannot give online, you can still give early by post. Please send your gift (cheques should be made payable to ‘Emmanuel College Development Fund’) to:

The Development Office
Emmanuel College
St Andrew's St

Please note there may be delays in processing and acknowledging gifts made by post.

I’m having trouble making my gift on the Emma gives site. What should I do?

Common errors that prevent gifts from being processed correctly are:

  • Incorrect card details
  • Postcode is incorrect or doesn’t match the address linked to your card

Please double-check the above.

If you continue to have problems making your gift please email us at

If the issue cannot be resolved, you can donate through the online through the college website.

How can I help spread the word about Emma gives?

Your support will make a huge difference to Emmanuel College and to the success of our Giving Day. Post about Emma gives with the hashtag #emmagives on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram - and don’t forget to tag us too! Make sure to tell your friends about our Giving Day and encourage them to get involved and make a difference.

Want to make an even bigger difference? Become an ambassador: just click on this link to find out more.

What is an ambassador, and what am I committing to?

An ambassador is someone who chooses to help support us in the lead up to the Giving Day and on the day itself, by acting as a ‘digital’ volunteer.

All that we ask is that you help us to spread the word about Emma gives by liking and/or sharing/retweeting our posts. Sharing the link to our Emma gives site is also extremely helpful.

When you sign in, you’ll have access to messages you can copy and share throughout the day as well as images you can use if you decide to share your own post.

As much as we try to tell all of our members about the amazing work that’s going on in college, it’s not always easy to reach everyone. By asking our members to help us, we can reach many more people.

Is my credit card payment secure?

Yes, we’re using a secure, off-site payment processor called Stripe to process our credit card transactions.

Is there a minimum or maximum donation I can make?

The minimum online gift amount is £1. There’s no maximum donation, and no limit on the impact you can make.

Can I claim Gift Aid on this donation?

Yes! So long as you are a UK taxpayer and have paid as much Income Tax and/or Capital Gains tax as the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in that tax year, the college can reclaim the basic tax rate (25%) on your gift, with no extra cost to you. So, for example, your donation of £100 will actually be worth £125.

Will my Emma gives contribution be tax-deductible?

UK taxpayers:

If you pay income tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your self-assessment tax return or ask HM revenue and Customs to adjust your tax code.

Yes: you can donate in USD to the American Fund for Emmanuel (AFFE), a 501(c)3 non-profit organisation which supports the work of Emmanuel.

You can either donate to the AFFE on our Emma gives site on the day itself (simply select ‘donate in USD’ and you will see the American Fund donation form) or through the college website as usual before the day. You will receive a tax-receipt from the American Fund after you’ve made your gift.

Rest of World:

If you are based in Hong Kong or Europe, you can make tax-effective gifts to Emmanuel*, but it is not possible to do so through our Emma gives website. If you’d like to make a tax-effective gift in support of our Giving Day, the best option is to give early.

Please visit for more information on tax-effective giving from abroad.

*If you give through TGE (Europe), or Hong Kong Foundation for Charities on 16 -17 March, unfortunately we will not be able to count your gift towards challenges on the day UNLESS you notify us that you have donated and how much before Emma gives is over.
