Frequently asked questions

What is Emma Gives?

Emma Gives is Emmanuel College’s annual Giving Day, taking place this year on 14-15 March 2023.

It’s one day for Emma members all over the world to come together and make a significant and lasting difference to the lives of Emma students. As part of Emma Gives we have several challenge and matching funds waiting to be unlocked, meaning gifts towards the Giving Day go much further than usual.

During this 24 hour online fundraising challenge, we are aiming to raise as much support as possible for the student support fund, with a particular focus on three key areas: access and outreach, the hardship fund, and support for graduate students.

What difference will my donation make?

You can read all about student support, access and outreach, student hardship and graduate support on their individual project pages on this site.

All gifts, of whatever size, add up and make a significant difference. Having a large number of donors encourages others to support us too, so we would love as many members to participate in Emma Gives as possible.

Why is Emma Gives different than any other day?

Gifts made to Emma Gives go further than usual, thanks to several challenge and matching funds provided by generous Emma members. The first £25,000 raised will be matched pound for pound, and early gifts made before the day will be counted and matched too. Several donors have also provided challenge funds that will be unlocked once we achieve various milestones. Take a look at the ‘Challenges’ tab to see if your gift is eligible to unlock funds this year.

Don’t forget to get your gifts in early to take advantage of the matching gift.

NB: For tax purposes, donors who participate in the giving challenges will be credited for their individual contribution only.

How can I make my gift?

We want to make it easy for you to participate in our Giving Day. We’d love you to join in on 14 - 15 March, but we know that your schedule might not allow you to participate during the Giving Day itself.

There are several ways to make your gift, whether you’d like to give on the day or before it

On the day (14 - 15 March, 12 noon- 12 noon):

Online through our Emma Gives website (the site you’re currently on).

Before the day:

If you would like to make an early gift to Emma Gives, the best way to do so at this time is online.

If you cannot give online, you can still give early by post. Please send your gift (cheques should be made payable to ‘Emmanuel College Development Fund’) to:

I’m having trouble making my gift on the Emma Gives site. What should I do?

We’re sorry that you’re having problems making your gift. Common errors that prevent gifts from being processed correctly are:

  • Incorrect card details
  • Postcode/zipcode is incorrect or doesn’t match the address linked to your card

Please double-check the above before you contact us.

If you continue to have problems making your gift please email us at development-office@emma.cam.ac.uk. You can also call us during office hours on +44(0)1223 330476.

If the issue cannot be resolved, you can donate online through the college website.  Please let us know if you have donated this way so we can count it on our Emma Gives site.

How can I help spread the word about Emma Gives?

Your support will make a huge difference to the success of our Giving Day and to the difference we can make to students’ lives. We would be very grateful if you could help us spread the word about Emma Gives, by liking and sharing our posts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn in the lead up to the day and on the day itself. If you’d like to do a bit more to help spread the word, you could share the link to our Emma Gives site, or share your own post encouraging other to get involved and support our Giving Day. Make sure you use the hashtag #EmmaGives and tag us in your posts so that we can see them! Word of mouth is helpful too, so please tell your Emma friends about our Giving Day and encourage them to get involved.

Is my credit card payment secure?

Yes, we’re using a secure, off-site payment processor called Stripe to process our credit card transactions.

Is there a minimum or maximum donation I can make?

The minimum online gift amount is £1. There’s no maximum donation, and no limit on the impact you can make.

Can I claim Gift Aid on this donation?

Yes! So long as you are a UK taxpayer and have paid as much Income Tax and/or Capital Gains tax as the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in that tax year, the college can reclaim the basic tax rate (25%) on your gift, with no extra cost to you. So, for example, your donation of £100 will actually be worth £125.

You can declare Gift Aid when you fill out the online donation form.

Will my Emma Gives contribution be tax-deductible?

UK taxpayers:

If you pay income tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your self-assessment tax return or ask HM revenue and Customs to adjust your tax code.

USA:

Yes: you can donate in USD to the American Fund for Emmanuel (AFFE), a 501(c)3 non-profit organisation which supports the work of Emmanuel.

You can donate to the AFFE on our Emma Gives site before or on the day (simply select ‘donate in USD’ and you will see the American Fund donation form). You will receive a tax-receipt from the American Fund after you’ve made your gift.

Rest of World:

If you are based in Hong Kong or Europe, you can make tax-effective gifts to Emmanuel*, but it is not possible to do so through our Emma Gives website. If you’d like to make a tax-effective gift in support of our Giving Day, the best option is to give early and let us know

Please visit www.emma.cam.ac.uk/supporting/how/abroad/ for more information on tax-effective giving from abroad.

*If you give through TGE (Europe), or Hong Kong Foundation for Charities on 15 - 16 March, unfortunately we will not be able to count your gift towards challenges on the day UNLESS you notify us that you have donated and tell us the amount before Emma Gives is over.

How can I get in touch?
